Owners Samherji Island and Sildarvinnslan, has confirmed orders for two identical 88,00 m Purser/ Trawler newbuildings with Karstensen Shipyard.
#452 will be named VILHELM ÞORSTEINSSON and is owned by Samherji Island.
#453 will be named BÖRKUR and is owned by Sildarvinnslan.
Samherji Island currently operates 2 pelagic vessels in Iceland, as well as several fresh fish trawlers. Þorsteinn Mar Baldvinsson is CEO of the Samherji conglomerate, which is involved in fishing operations in England, Germany, Poland, etc.
Sildarvinnslan currently operates another 3 pelagic vessels in Iceland, as well as the largest fish meal processing plant in Iceland.
Karstensen Shipyard is delighted with this new contract, which not only stresses the shipyards position as the prime designer and builder of larger pelagic fishing vessels, but also represents a major breakthrough in the Icelandic market.
Karstensen Shipyard offers a complete concept, where all solutions are optimized and tailor made to customer specifications and requirements. Karstensen is independent of all suppliers, which makes such an optimization very flexible.
The vessels design, specification and arrangements are results of an extensive and close cooperation between owners and yard. Main focus has been set on optimizing working, safety and comfort for the crew, optimizing catch handling- and storage facilities and optimizing of fuel consumption.
In order to reach above targets, the ships will be outfitted with all the newest machinery and equipment, and suppliers are currently in the process of being chosen to match specification and requirements. Propulsion plant will comprise a twin-engine solution, with 2-in-1 out gearbox. Propeller to have single speed, 125 rpm and diameter of 4,5m for optimized efficiency.
New VILHELM ÞORSTEINSSON is scheduled for delivery in June 2020.
New BÖRKUR is scheduled for delivery in December 2020.
Hulls for both vessels will be built in newly established Karstensen Shipyard Poland facilities in Gdynia.
